The Historic Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco

Writer: JillJill

We had a lovely time. And this place is truly amazing, definitely from a different time. I enjoyed our stay, as I fantasized about walking down the marble staircase in a jeweled burgundy gown at the turn of the century.

The Fairmont was almost completed before the 1906 earthquake, and though the structure held, there was much interior damage. Julia Morgan was hired to repair and reconstruct The Fairmont after the earthquake.

To be honest, however, despite the historicity, and the grandeur of the edifice, it looked a little dog eared around the edges. The hotel room furniture definitely needed upgrading. The carpets needed to be replaced throughout. And while it still impressed, it just looked a little tired.

I do hope the owners take care to continue to carefully steward this precious jewel as it continues into its second century.
