My Spirits Lift when I am in the Garden

I know that title sounds so poetic. But it's how I feel. The news has been dark, and I am feeling anxious. So, despite being married to the best Substack writer in the world (that's you, Mr. Hubbell) I am still struggling. And the garden helps. A lot.
First, I'm more tired in the evening from the physical exertion, so it's easier to sleep. And even though my back sometimes hurts, I think it's worth it. Second, I wake up with less dread because I know that I am going outside to be in the spring sunshine, and plan for the future. And last, I feel a sense of satisfaction at day's end, that I have accomplished something for my little corner of the world.
Tomorrow I will protest. Tomorrow I will write postcards. Tomorrow, I will be all-in again, supporting Mr. Hubbell with his Herculean effort on "Today's Edition." But today, today I am in the garden, and except for a few weeds, everything feels right.
Honestly, if you feel the way I do, get in the garden. And I know that some of you don't have gardens, but even nurturing a tomato plant in a pot outside your door, or an African violet on your window sill, is a wonderful way to experience the benefits of growing, taking in the sunshine, nurturing a living thing, and being surprised and delighted at its progress.
Let me know how your garden grows!
