Mountain Gardening: Before and After!

There's a big surprise at the end of the video! As Robert was inspecting the hole, the other side of it caved in -- and his leg sunk in -- practically to his knee! I gasped because I was watching him as he poked around. Oh my! I was hoping that underneath was buried treasure, but, it's only an ancient cess pool from pre 1960. :( Still, it will be a fair bit of work to get this remedied...but Mr. Hubbell already has a plan!
The earliest cabins in Silver City, California, likely date back to the 1870s, following the discovery of silver in the area and the construction of the Mineral King Road in 1873. These cabins were built by miners and prospectors during the early days of the silver boom. While the boom eventually faded, a small mountain cabin community persisted, with many of the original cabins still standing and owned by descendants of the first settlers. Robert's family had a cabin in Silver City beginning in the 1930's when his Aunt Della and Uncle Hixie would herd cattle up the road to graze on the grasses in the Sierras.
It's a wonderful family tradition to spend time in the Sierras, and I am grateful to Robert's family to be a part of it.
Everything looks great, Jill. We’ll be there the last week in June and I can’t wait!
I know “our” cabin was built in the early 30s by Jimmy Mehrten, who originally owned and ran the store. The counters and cabinets in the kitchen are made from lumber milled in Silver City. Knowing the history makes a special place even more so. I’m looking forward to seeing the lupine and all the wildflowers!
