I just love this place. It's a life lived long ago, but such a different life from ours. Beauty, elegance, grace, preserved for us to see today.
Marjorie Merriweather Post was the daughter of C.W. Post, (the cereal magnate) and, as an only child, became the CEO of the company at 27, after her father's death. Her final residence in Washington D.C. was named Hillwood (Her winter residence was at Mar-a Lago which she deeded to the state, who then sold it to Donald Trump.)
The house itself is not particularly grand, but perfect for entertaining and is preserved exactly as Marjorie Merriweather Post left it. However, the contents of the museum are breathtaking. More on that soon!
Hillwood Museum and Gardens is a must see if you are in D.C. While there is so musch to see in D.C., this museum is a very intimate portrait of a strong, and yes, wealthy, woman who loved entertaining ( and china!) and gardening. (Orchids were her favorite!)
I was so grateful that my family indulged me and accompanied me on a visit to one of my favorite places.
